Happy Thanksgiving!

Telluride Affiliates Blog

Thanksgiving week started with lots of fresh snow on the ground and the Ski Company reporting 75 inches of snow YTD for the season and a 41 inch base. With all the new snow we’re on track for one of the best opening days in quite some time and the mountain opens tomorrow, Nov. 27th, with Donation Day, a fundraiser for the Telluride Ski & Snowboard Club. All tickets are $25 and all proceeds go to the Club’s scholarship fund.

The skiing should be great, so come support the kids and see why Conde Nast Traveler readers once again ranked Telluride the #1 Ski Resort in North America!

We hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving holiday wherever you are and look forward to seeing you when you are in town. As always, please feel free to stop by the office or contact us online or at 970-728-0213.

2014 Best Ski Resorts in the West - Telluride Affiliates

SkiNet.com recently released 2014’s Best Ski Resorts in the West and Tellurid made the list!

Those surveyed had this to say about Telluride:

“So uncrowded you can still be hitting untracked powder at the end of the day after a storm.”

“I love Telluride because of the town and the beauty of the place. You feel you’re somewhere very special when you’re there, almost a fairytale storybook kind of place. To be able to ski there too is icing on the cake!”

Find out the other cities that made the list.

Our city has received another distictive recognition: One of four Great North American Heli-Skiing Trips

Here’s what they had to say about our great city!

With access to the San Juan Mountains—one of the few places to heli-ski in Colorado—Telluride Helitrax takes skiing to new heights, about 13,500 feet up in the air. You’ll have access to more than 200 square miles of some of the best skiable terrain in the country with vertical drops as high as 3,000 feet. If your plans take you to the slopes in Aspen, Vail or Beaver Creek, Helitrax offers chartered flights to Telluride that will have you back before happy hour so you can experience the après ski scene, too.

Check in here: Take a load off at the ski-in/ski-out Hotel Madeline Telluride in Mountain Village with its luxe rooms, relaxing spa and gourmet restaurant. If you’re looking to curl up by the fire, book one of the 11 suites or 12 condos for a real Rocky Mountain stay.

Condé Nast Traveler has named Telluride the #1 Ski area in all of US and Canada.

In their annual Readers’ Choice Survey, they asked 20,000 Condé Nast Traveler skiiers to vote on the best ski areas in North America—and they came up with an impressive list of must-visit mountain towns. Telluride received a Readers’ Choice Rating  of 94.1%.

Here’s what they had to say:

Our readers consider Telluride “the most beautiful mountain town in Colorado with views reminiscent of the Alps,” rocketing it to the number one spot in our poll. Readers love the no-line lifts, the steep terrain, and the overall laid-back vibe, adding it’s “absolutely the world’s greatest ski area when it comes to variety of difficulty.” What’s more, Telluride is a “fun town to explore,” “a little slice of heaven in a gorgeous box canyon.”

Telluride’s ghouls and goblins have been out since Friday at many of the town’s unique Halloween celebrations. It all comes to an end Thursday with the annual parade and official celebration and then we’re on to winter! There’s already a lot of snow in the high country (and on Gold Hill) and there’s more forecast this week.

If you haven’t already purchased your season pass, the deadline for early bird pricing is this Friday, November 1. For details visit www.TellurideSkiResort.com.

Real estate activity has also continued to be robust with Telluride Consulting reporting almost $34 million in sales in September, a jump of 63% over Sept. 2012, which pulls us ahead of last year’s numbers by 6% for dollar volume YTD and leaves us just 5% behind 2012 in terms of number of sales. That said, some segments of the market are considerably stronger than others. Call or email if you’d like more details.

Forbes Contributor Names Telluride as Favorite Resort

Forbes Article

Larry Olmstead, Forbes contributor, has recently named the Telluride Ski Resort as his new favorite ski resort!

He credits the most important reason for his love of Telluride Ski Resort as the Terrain. With trails good enough for the pros, Larry loves this about this location. Let’s also remember that for those who are a little less advanced in skiing, we’ve got some great trails for you too.

Secondly, he appreciates the “presence of a town” nearby as another reason people should check it out.

Lastly, Telluride offers a wide-range of activities in and around the resort. It keeps you captivated, and entertained enough to stick around.

September 2013

September has flown by and we had snow in town yesterday morning! It’s only a matter of weeks before we’re basking in the fantastic fall colors and skiing and snowboarding won’t be long after that.

Real estate activity has continued to pick up and Telluride Consulting reported almost $47 million in sales in August, a jump of 56% over August 2012, which brings us about even with last year’s numbers and September looks like it will be another strong month.

There are also a large number of future development projects working their way through the various approvals processes — the Telluride Science Research Center and the Town of Telluride are making progress with negotiations for the facility across from the post office, as is the redevelopment of the Zoline family holdings at the intersection of Pacific and Fir in conjunction with the Meriwether Companies out of Boulder and Los Angeles. There is also a new winter sports academy being proposed by the Next Level Institute-Springbok International School & Sports Academy for Mountain Village. The project’s budget is over $100 million and its campus would be extensive, with a school, dormitory and recreation facility. All of these are still in the early stages, but seeing this type of interest in Telluride and Mountain Village is encouraging.

August 2013

It’s hard to believe it’s already the middle of August! As usual, Telluride and Mountain Village have been very busy.

Last month the Telluride Historical Museum was named a Smithsonian Affiliate (congratulations) and earlier this month it was announced that Allegiant Air will once again have two flights into the Montrose Airport this winter ˆ one from Phoenix and another from Los Angeles (LAX). Look for more details in future ecards.

Telluride was also named one of the 10 friendliest cities in the US by Conde Nast Traveler (coming in at #8) ˆ click here for more details.

Real estate activity seems to be picking up again after a slight lull mid summer. There are now seven homes under contract in Telluride and five in Mountain Village and condo sales remain steady as well.

July 2013

We’ve had a busy month with the Fireman’s 4th of July Celebration, the Sheridan Opera House’s 100th Birthday and the Annual Ah Haa Art Auction, among many others. The monsoons have also finally arrived and it’s great to have the moisture!

At the Ah Haa Auction a consortium of local realtors and homeowners, including Jim and Virginia, purchased a mixed media piece created by former ski area owner and Mountain Village founder Ron Allred and artist Judy Haas. Allred purchased the ski area in 1978 and the display includes maps of the region and Allred’s words about how the community and landowners came together to create a master regional plan and limit growth. An interesting study some 30+ years later, the piece will be installed in a public venue TBD.

Also last week Telluride Mayor Stu Fraser gave his biannual state of the town address and overall things are looking very promising. Sales tax revenues are up 11% YTD over 2012. Real estate sales through June 30 have not, however, been quite as robust. Currently San Miguel County is trending 6% behind 2012 in terms of dollar volume of sales and 11% behind in number of sales. That said, we anticipate that this gap will close, particularly as sales in Mountain Village increase.

June 2013

Last week we had our first Farmer’s Market and next weekend’s annual Bluegrass Festival has been sold out for months.

In May the Galloping Goose, a quirky gas-powered railbus owned by the Telluride Volunteer Fire Department that hauled mail, freight and passengers on the Rio Grande Southern Railroad in the 30s and 40s, returned to Telluride after an extensive restoration. The Goose was one of only seven railbuses built and is now parked just west of the courthouse. Our own volunteer firefighter Jim Lucarelli was on hand for its triumphant return and it is a must-see part of Telluride’s history. Call Jim for a personal tour.

In real estate news there are a number of large deals in the Town of Telluride in the works including a comprehensive redevelopment of the Zoline family holdings at the intersection of Pacific and Fir and a new public/private partnership between the Telluride Science Resource Center (TSRC) and the town for development of a world-class science center on town-owned land across from the Post Office.
