Looking for some of the best things to do in Telluride? We’ve got you covered! Here are several places you should definitely check out:
Located within the Bear Creek Canyon and flanked by enchanting cliffs, Bear Creek Falls is a scenic destination that’s perfect for outdoor adventurers of all ages. The falls is accessible from one of Telluride’s most popular trails, the Bear Creek Preserve Trail.
The picturesque, well-marked wooded trail is about 2.5 miles away from Bear Creek Falls, which takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes to get there from the trailhead at a leisurely pace. You can find the trailhead at the end of South Pine Street.
Another excellent trail to visit is the Jud Wiebe Trail, a short 3-mile loop trail that is easily accessible from town. The trail takes hikers past groves of soaring aspen trees and serene meadows, while treating them to breathtaking views of the Bridal Veil Falls all the way to the Valley Floor.
You can access the trail by walking to the top of North Aspen Street. Look out for a bridge on your left, and walk on the path until you reach the top of North Oak Street. You’ll find a dirt road known as Tomboy Road. Take the first left from here.
Black Bear Pass is a scenic forest service road from the summit of Red Mountain Pass. Visitors can take in gorgeous panoramic views throughout the drive, while passing by several historic mines and the Bridal Veil Falls along the way.
Keep in mind that the road is winding and could be difficult to drive for inexperienced drivers, but it’s manageable during the months when it is open (July to October).
Alta Lakes is a popular family-friendly destination during both summer and winter. Located close to the Telluride Ski Resort and Palmyra Peak, the three lakes offer a wide range of outdoor activities including camping, hiking, fly fishing, paddle boarding, and more.
Camping is one of the best activities to enjoy, especially during the summer. You can find several free-to-use camping spots surrounding the high-alpine lake, some of which are equipped with cooking grills. In the morning, campers can enjoy a relaxing hike around the lake, where you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of the historic remnants of the Alta Lakes Ghost Town.
In the winter, Alta Lakes becomes one of the best snowmobiling destinations in Telluride. Keep in mind that Alta Lakes Road is only accessible via snowmobile during the winter, as it is not maintained during the season.
