San Miguel County is located in southwest Colorado and covers 1,289 square miles. Named for the San Miguel River that flows along its eastern border, the county was originally part of Ouray County before it was split into two in 1883. From being a miners hub in the late 1800s,San Miguel County has grown into a nationally recognized recreational and cultural destination today.

The county has an estimated population of 7,840, with 2,325 living in its county seat of Telluride. Telluride is located in the San Juan Mountains and is most famous for its ski resort and arts festivals.

In addition to Telluride, San Miguel County also includes Mountain Village, a resort community located 9,540 feet above Telluride, and home to the popular Telluride Ski Resort. The county also encompasses four other towns and two unincorporated communities, as follows:

The population in the inhabited municipalities outside Telluride and Mountain Village range from 40 to less than 500, resulting in a population density throughout the entire county of only five per square mile, one of the lowest in the United States.

  • Conde Nast Traveler, SKI Magazine, and Forbes have consistently ranked Telluride Ski Resort as one of the top ski resorts of the country. Home to large and beautifully forested ski ranges, the resort is located in Mountain Village, which is connected to the town of Telluride via a free scenic gondola service. In the summer, the resort is a great place for hiking, biking, camping, and other outdoor recreation.

  • Telluride Historic District
  • Making up part of downtown Telluride, the historic district is a cultural attraction listed in the National Register of Historic Places and Colorado’s 20 National Historic Landmarks. It features Victorian-era homes and structures that have remained standing since the town’s mining heydays. One of these structures is the present-day Telluride Historical Museum, housed in the former Hall’s Hospital, which was built in 1896.

  • A part of the forest lies in San Miguel County, providing outdoor adventurers with amazing hikes and trails, as well as grounds for fly fishing, horseback riding, camping, and more. Other natural attractions in the area include the Bridal Veil Falls and Ingram Falls near Telluride.

  • In recent decades, the county has become famous for its summer festivities including the Telluride Film Festival, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, the Telluride Chamber Music Festival, and the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival. Some events have attracted over 70,000 attendees to the Town Park venue and have featured prominently in media platforms like Esquire Magazine and Vogue.
